Development in Ubuntu Cont'd
One critical tool needed is a way to easily package an application for Ubuntu. Some people will say that this is too complicated to automate, but if that were true dpkg wouldn't work at all. If applications can be made to conform to a standard that can be easily understood by a computer, then the process of packaging can certainly be automated with a computer. Anything that can be understood by a computer can be created by a computer. What's needed is an IDE that's designed to this end, or at least a plugin for an existing IDE. This would help to eliminate problems with poorly packaged applications and make many more packages available through APT. No more installing from tarballs. This would also mean more up-to-date packages. When creating a project, a wizard could walk the developer through the necessary steps of creating a .deb file.
